Principal and Founder Susan M. Detwiler consults to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations, as a natural progression from her 25 years in for-profit marketing, and 5 years as head of a nonprofit agency.
Ms. Detwiler specializes in working with boards and administration, aligning values and mission in issues of governance, management and fundraising. Her experience as both an Executive Director of nonprofit agencies and as director on the boards of several nonprofits provides insights from both sides of the table.
Ms. Detwiler has served as an Interim Executive in different capacities for varied nonprofits, including a private day school, a music school and an animal rescue agency. She has facilitated retreats, conducted strategic planning, mission audits and board education for a diverse range of secular, ethnic and faith-based organizations, including religious day schools, Delaware’s Governor’s Advisory Council on Hispanic Affairs and social service agencies. She has also successfully guided two organizations through their first accreditations.
Prior to establishing The Detwiler Group to serve nonprofit organizations, Ms. Detwiler’s served five years as Executive Director of the Hillel Foundation Kristol Center for Jewish Life at University of Delaware. This followed 18 years as President and owner of a medical information and marketing research firm serving Fortune 500 clients.
Ms. Detwiler has served as an adjunct professor for Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and as a frequent speaker at national industry groups including Association of Fundraising Professionals and American Library Association. She has received awards for the annual Detwiler’s Directory of Health and Medical Resources, and contributed to numerous industry journals and books. Ms. Detwiler also served on the national boards of health and information industry organizations.
Prior to founding her consulting firm, Ms. Detwiler worked in market research in the medical device industry. She has an MBA from University of Michigan and a BS in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Albany.
